Give em' a Drum
Denes McIntosh
Mickey walked the halls all night
up and down that long aisle like
a scene from one of those old Jack Nickelson movies
Billy slumped down low in his chair
nursing his depression like you'd wear
your finest suit for everybody to see
Chorus:
We drive em there in our expensive cars
drop em off with a ticket to mars
give em a drum and a wooden spoon to bang with.
They couldn't cope with societies stuff
they lose their homes and we lend em a buck
it's a wonder that we don't just give em a rope to hang with.
Benny sits and swears at the wall
angry at the way the dice fall
give the man another med, it'll settle him down.
Lucy likes to stay up all night
sittin' on her bed with no light
talkin' to herself without makin' a sound.
Chorus:
Martin says "it just doesn't matter"
he tried to climb the corporate ladder
gave the company his soul and they ate him alive.
Linda watches television all day
imagining the parts they all play
waiting for her life to hurry up and arrive.
Chorus:

I Miss You When You're Gone
Denes McIntosh
On a quiet morning in the early spring
you sat before your window in the soft light
Sipping green tea and gathering your thoughts
It would be a cold day, it was a long night.
You watched me standing in the frozen yard
I watched the shadows struggling to leave
The sun was creeping slowly through the garden gate
while your eyes were warming me.
Chorus:
I remember when we met
It felt alot like that
I watched you sitting on an old chase lounge
beneath your garden hat.
I remember how I felt
like waking from a nap
I watched the sunlight warm your face
while you were watching back.
She beckoned me to come back inside
Coffee was brewing in an old copper pot
She said "I know you were only in the garden babe,
but I miss you when you're gone".
Chours:
I remember when we met
It felt alot like that.
I watched you sitting on an old chase lounge
beneath your garden hat.
I remember how I felt
like waking from a nap
I watched the sunlight warm your face
while you were watching back.

One Foot On The Ground

One Foot on the Ground
Denes McIntosh
I’ve lived a life time just this week
been wide awake while tryin’ to sleep.
Waiting all night long for dawn to break
morning came too late for me
The sky fell down around me
it piled up around my feet
The ground shook like a lover
falling hard to her knees.
Chorus:
Ain’t life just like that
with your head in the clouds
You got one foot on the moon, my friend
and the other foot on the ground.
I must remind you
every time you make a sound
Somebody will be listening
someone else will write it down.
I walk the gauntlet on my hands
I hold the fire in my teeth
Give my ten percent to Jesus
and have ninety left for me.
I scrape my salt from the earth
I drink my whisky from the stream
I take my shower in the storm
y’know I’ve never been so clean.
Chorus:
I let nature run it’s course
I met a woman by the well
We talked of living in the moment
like the tolling of a bell.
She took the rocks from my bag
she took the weight from my load
She shook the dust from her wings
and disappeared on down the road.
Chorus:
The sun came up in the west today
the rain rose up to the clouds
I drove myself crazy
on my way outta town.
Trees growin’ up from the sidewalk
buildings planted in the ground
My knees been shakin’ like a wet dog
whose bark don’t make a sound.
Chorus:
I found your bones on the beach
they drifted in from the sea
I called the coroner to collect you
while the queen came round for tea.
I saw you smiling in my dream
I heard you laughing at my door
I opened it to find you
standing naked on the porch.
Chorus:

Before Her Time

|

Before Her Time
Denes McIntosh
Shy as a whisper
strong as the wind
coming off the mountain
where we'd all like to live.
The breath of life had kissed her
long before her lover did
y' know I'm gonna miss her
she was born to live.
Chorus:
She was a friend of mine
she's gone before her time.
Laughter like a bubbling spring
smile like the morning
eyes like I had never seen
she came and went before me
Chorus:
She was a friend of mine
she's gone before her time.
Bridge:
And if you see her
when you reach the other side
tell her I need her
I can't seem to get it right.
And if you see her
when you reach the other side
tell her I'll leave
my yellow candle lit at night.
Chorus:
She was a friend of mine
she's gone before her time.

The Little Things
Denes McIntosh
It’s just the little things.
The sun brushing softly across your neck
The light fading slowly where you step
The sound of your breath.
It’s just the little things.
The faint smile on your lips
The subtle dancing of your finger tips
The rhythm of your hips.
Chorus:
It’s just the little things
that make me wild about you,
that make me smile inside
when I’m beside you.
It’s just the little things.
The glistening sweat on your nose
The way you wiggle your toes
The casual fit of your clothes.
It’s just the little things.
The way that you stand
The long curve of your back
The quiet touch of your hand.
Chorus:
It’s just the little things
that make me wild about you,
that make me smile inside
when I’m beside you.

The Garden

The Garden
Denes McIntosh
We were born in the Garden
weeping willows all hangin' down
Sunshine warm on our bodies
walking barefoot on the ground.
We were alive in the Garden
like a lazy Autumn afternoon
Our laughter echoed through the canyon,
sweet gardenia's were all in bloom.
We made love in the Garden
like in some faint Celestial dream
Beneath the silent mountain
we soaked our bodies in the bubbling stream.
GOTTA GET BACK
There was music in the Garden
nature sang a mystic tune
It was quiet and assuring
no one ever spoke too soon.
GOTTA GET BACK.
We were a family in the Garden
we had integrity, our word was true.
There was kindness and compassion
you cared for me and I cared for you.
GOTTA GET BACK.
Got to get back to the Garden
got to learn to live again.
Got to get back to the Garden
got to learn to live and love again.
GOTTA GET BACK.

Ancient Tune
Denes McIntosh
Wind across the water in the afternoon
remembering the summer I had with you
There's a choir in the distance
there's a fire in the dark
like a singer needs a song
I know a fire needs a spark.
If you would listen I would sing for you
There's a smile babe I could bring to you
If you would listen there's an ancient tune
I would play on the day that you come back
It seems like centuries
It's been so quiet here
Those vivid memories bring a silent tear
Tonight I just can't take, can't take the cold babe
There's nothing I wouldn't do to have you back.
Listen. . . . .
I'd build you a castle with my very own hands
I'd cut the stone babe, and dig the sand
I'd paint the sky for you and till the land
There's nothing I wouldn't do to have you back
There's nothing I wouldn't do to have you back.

Morning Light
Denes McIntosh
Morning light,
I can breathe deeply.
I can be truly alive today.
Morning light,
the dark will be leaving,
packing up quickly and moving away.
Morning light,
I can see clearly.
It was all a bit cloudy the night before.
Morning light,
Dancin' like jewelry
on the hand of a young girl outside my door.
Chorus:
Rose colored glasses can't make it like this.
The smell of the morning, a natural kiss.
Steam rising wet from the rocks in the yard
while the sun warms the earth in my garden.
Morning light,
I will be singin'.
We're all born again at the start of the day.
Morning light, a time to begin.
Like an wandering poet with somethin' to say.
Chorus:
Rose colored glasses can't make it like this.
The smell of the morning, a natural kiss.
Steam rising wet from the rocks in the yard
while the sun warms the earth in my garden

My Way Home

My Way Home
Denes McIntosh
Rugged coastline, rocks like mountains
reaching out from beneath my feet
Wearing down by the hands of time
and the pounding of the sea.
Pelicans patrolling the rolling waves
in their ritual search for food
Gliding by in single file
on a windy afternoon.
Sea lions lazing in the warm sun
living free in Shelter Cove
Beyond the perils of the dark sea
where it's dangerous to be alone.
Black sand beaches left untouched
no footprints in the sand
A man can feel as close to God
as anybody can.
Sun sinking slowly in the evening sky
heart rising with the tide
I'll be finding my way home
on the next boat drifting by.

Leave my Toes Alone
Denes McIntosh
You can pull my leg, you can make me shake
give me chills down to the bone
you can pick my brain, you can ease my pain
but baby leave my toes alone.
You can tickle my fancy, you can lick my stamps
you can break my heart of stone
you can take my pants, make me get up and dance
but baby leave my toes alone.
Chorus:
Leave my toes alone
baby leave my toes alone
I ain't the kind to be so inclined
baby leave my toes alone.
You can rub my back, love my baby fat
you can make my body moan
you can hold me tight every Saturday night
but baby leave my toes alone.
Chorus:
You can squeeze my sponge, you can butter my buns
you can love me over the phone
you can study my face, kiss me any place
but baby leave my toes alone
Chorus:

The Outcast
Denes McIntosh
He was all alone
not because he chose to be
but he was born to see things differently.
He was fully grown
at an age when most young men
most young men could not begin to be.
The ladies loved him
he told the truth to them
something they had never known before.
He gave them dignity
not like the other men
who made them all to be domestic whores.
Chorus:
And he was an outcast
and he was an honest man
and he would outlast
those who would not understand.
And he was a rebel
but not without a cause
sing a song for honesty
cause there's been none since he's gone.
He went his own way
they talked behind his back
but could not face him.
Until that final day
'the last great heart attack'
they could not break him.
chorus:
Sing a song for justice.
Sing a song for love.

Seattle Calling
Denes McIntosh
Chorus:
Seattle calling, the road heading north
The sky has fallen with a deafening roar.
The sky has fallen with a deafening roar.
My brother cut down like a man out on a limb.
Nobody knows how it could’ve happened to him.
Nobody knows how it could’ve happened to him.
Chorus:
Seattle calling, the road heading north
The sky has fallen with a deafening roar.
The sky has fallen with a deafening roar.
My brother won’t sit at my table again
I’ll never be able to talk with the man.
I will never be able to talk with the man.
Chorus:
Seattle calling, the road heading north
The sky has fallen with a deafening roar.
The sky has fallen with a deafening roar.
I want to revisit the years that we missed
while I followed my path, and he followed his.
while I followed my own path, and he followed his.
Chorus:
Seattle calling, the road heading north
The sky has fallen with a deafening roar.
The sky has fallen with a deafening roar.

Some Will Say Goodbye
Denes McIntosh
It’s gettin’ cold outside
My breath turns to frost in the early light
Ahh, in the early light
It’s gettin’ cold outside.
I’m gettin’ old inside
With death burning a cross upon an empty sky
Upon an empty sky
I’m gettin’ old inside.
Chorus:
It ain’t like it wasn’t expected to happen
It ain’t like it’s come as a big surprise
Every life will fade and fall away now
Some will say goodbye before their time.
It’s slowin’ down now
Everything I thought was out of reach has come around
It’s come around now
It’s all slowin’ down.
It’s goin’ south now
Everything that’s been reachin’ out is falling down now.
It’s fallin’ down now
It’s all goin’ south.
Chorus:

Your Healing Grace

Your Healing Grace
Denes McIntosh
There’s an anger in our heart
and it will not dissipate
without the love you give
without your healing grace.
There’s a loneliness inside
and it will not go away
without the hope that you provide
without your warm embrace.
There’s a bitterness beneath
the smile we often wear
but it’s much too hard to breathe
from way down there.
From way down there.
